PRAIRIE

Inspired by the work of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Prairie style is an early twentieth century home design with a long, low roofline, continuous rows of windows and an unornamented exterior. Bucking the trend of a traditional concept of a house—a box subdivided into smaller boxes (rooms)—the Prairie was intended to have a closer relationship with both the natural world outside its doors as well as the physical and psychological needs of the inhabitants. Solid construction, discipline when it comes to ornament, sweeping horizontal lines, wide open floor plans, rows of small windows and one-story projections are all common design elements.
